Save energy costs with an air and dirt separator

Modern heating systems and the products used within them, such as heat exchangers, valves, thermostatic radiator valves and radiators, are sensitive to air and dirt. Air in the system causes rust formation (corrosion), producing iron-containing particles such as magnetite, which enter the system water.

Where does the air in my heating system come from?

System water always contains a certain amount of dissolved air. The amount of air it can hold depends on the pressure and temperature. When the water is heated in a boiler or heat pump, some of this dissolved air is released in the form of microbubbles, which are then carried through the system.

Air in a heat pump or central heating system can cause various problems, such as bubbling or gurgling noises in pipes and radiators. Air pockets can also prevent radiators from heating up fully or, in some cases, from heating up at all.

In addition, oxygen in the system contributes to corrosion. This can lead to the formation of magnetite particles, which enter the system water and may cause a range of further problems.

Where does the dirt in my heating system come from?

The main cause of contamination in a heating system is corrosion. This occurs when oxygen in the system water reacts with ferrous materials in the installation. As a result, corrosion products such as magnetite are formed and enter the system water.

Magnetite is a major source of contamination in heat pump and central heating systems. Black or dark-coloured system water is often a clear indication that magnetite is present.

When magnetite accumulates in pumps, valves, heat exchangers and other parts of the installation, it can restrict flow, reduce system performance and cause increased wear or system failure.
